SHODO
Learn the Art of Japanese
Calligraphy at the JASDFW
Japanese
calligraphy (shodo)
is writing Chinese
characters (kanji)
and Japanese hiragana
with a brush and charcoal
ink. It was introduced from
China and grew in the sixth
and seventh centuries,
giving it over 1000 years of
history. Shodo is not
only an exercise in good
handwriting, but is a
creative art form as well.
It is the combination of
skill and imagination, and
through shodo, we
discipline our mind and
spirit.
This spring, JASDFW offers
an introductory course in
shodo. The curriculum,
covered in 7 classes over 8
weeks, will explain both the
basic techniques of
brush-writing and the
concept of shodo. The
course will use our original
textbook. No Japanese
language skills are
required.
