82% of Japanese feel friendly toward U.S.

A recent poll by the Japanese government shows a record number of Japanese respondents (82%) feel friendly toward the U.S. This is an increase of 2.1 percentage points from last year. The Foreign Ministry believes the increase is due to the U.S. military's relief efforts following the March earthquake and tsunami.

Vote for the Nengajo Grand Prize!

2012 Nengajo Winners

Students across Texas created New Year's cards for the 2012 Nengajo Contest. We received 80 handmade cards from 13 different schools!

Judging for the top three cards in each category and division has been completed, but we need your help to choose the Grand Prize winner! Visit our Facebook page between January 6 and 13 to vote for your favorite.

The winner will be announced at the 2012 Mochitsuki New Year's Celebration on January 15th. Thanks to Keiko Suzuki of Suzuki Graphic Design Studio for serving as judge.

Meet Margi Preus, author of Heart of a Samurai (a 2011 Newbery Honor Book). The book tells the story of the friendship between Manjiro, a young shipwrecked Japanese fisherman, and an American whaling captain, William Whitfield. This relationship provided the opportunity for Manjiro to become the first Japanese person to arrive on America's shores (and to participate in the first Japanese/American homestay!) and set the stage for him to become a player in shaping world events.

Preus will use slides to illustrate the story's background and her research. The program is appropriate for grade 4 through adult.

TIME:    Sunday, January 22  2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
PLACE: McDermott Suite in the McDermott Library, UT Dallas
800 West Campbell Road, Richardson, 75080 (map)
