Tanabata
The seventh day of the seventh month is said to be the only day of the year when the two star-crossed lovers are able to cross the Milky Way to meet. The Tanabata festival comes from China and was transmitted to Japan during the feudal period, later becoming an official event at the Imperial court.
Dallas' sister city, Sendai, is famous for its Tanabata celebration, but instead of July 7th, the festivities in Sendai are held on August 8th. This is because he original Tanabata date was based on the Japanese lunisolar calendar, which is about a month behind the Gregorian calendar. Some parts of Japan, such as Sendai, still celebrate on the original Japanese lunisolar date. For more information about Sendai and its Tanabata Festival, visit the City of Sendai's website. |
